Inchcape: Developed double materiality assessment and sustainability narrative

The challenge

Inchcape is a global, multi-brand automotive distributor. Regulatory mandates, including CSRD and ISSB Standards, necessitated a comprehensive double materiality assessment. Inchcape also wanted to adopt a prominent role within the future of mobility as it navigated one of the most transition-disrupted sectors globally. The task was then to develop Inchcape’s position and broaden its sustainability narrative.

Our approach

We began by executing a comprehensive double materiality assessment to identify the most critical sustainability issues facing Inchcape and its stakeholders. The project included qualitative and quantitative insights from  5 stakeholder groups, 6 Inchcape regions, 34 countries, 1,271 individuals and 14 sustainability topics.

Leveraging these findings, we worked closely with Inchcape to map out the future of mobility and future cities, taking into account industry trends, competitor analysis, and stakeholder input. Through a series of collaborative workshops, we developed a clear understanding of the roles Inchcape could authentically embody.  We then crafted a detailed messaging matrix tailored to key stakeholders, ensuring that Inchcape’s sustainability narrative was effectively communicated across diverse audiences.

Outcomes

  • A new, clear sustainability position and narrative that supports the sustainability agenda, broader business strategy and investment case – positioning Inchcape as a leader in the mobility transition without alienating transitioning ICE OEMs and ensuring a nuanced approach to each market.

  • Agreement and buy-in at PLC board level for the new direction and articulated strategy.

  • Global roll-out of the sustainability narrative through cascades, workshops, and the company's first sustainability report
