RS Group: Created an ambitious decarbonisation strategy with best-practice Scope 3 calculations and SBTi-aligned targets

The challenge

Following the successful completion of a quantitative scenario analysis with Sillion, RS Group—a leading FTSE100 electronics component distributor—sought to establish an ambitious, science-based decarbonisation strategy. They aimed to set targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to reinforce their commitment to sustainability and climate leadership.

Our approach

To support RS Group’s journey toward validated SBTi targets, Sillion conducted a detailed review of their Scope 3 emissions calculations, identifying gaps and aligning their processes with SBTi guidelines. By recalculating critical Scope 3 areas, we helped RS Group gain a comprehensive understanding of their full emissions profile.

Our team then developed a best-in-class decarbonisation model through 2050, addressing Scope 1, 2, and Scope 3 emissions by category and factoring in external influences such as grid decarbonisation, materials innovations, policy changes, and market demand. These tailored insights were pivotal in guiding RS Group’s SBTi validation process, which Sillion managed to streamline and support from start to finish.

Outcomes

  • This work enabled RS Group to achieve an SBTi-validated, science-based target, enhancing its approach to emissions management.

  • The updated Scope 3 model allowed for higher granularity, making it easier to identify emissions within specific product categories and regions.

  • The project established a structured decarbonisation trajectory that integrates into RS Group’s broader transition plan, supporting consistent progress monitoring.
